Events of the Recent Past

The PLSC organizes and sponsors various events throughout the year. Announcements of some events in the recent past are listed below as information for members, prospective members, and other persons interested in activities of the PLSC.

  • Deer Rifle Sight-In Day
    • Date: Saturday, October 27, 2018
    • Time: Range opens at 10 am. Assistance and use of supplied sighting-in equipment will end at 3 pm.
    • Location: PLSC Clubhouse and rifle range.
    • Public is welcome. Club grounds will be open to both members and non-members.
    • Lunch (free) will be available at the club at noon. If you plan to eat lunch, please call Dallas at 482-4365 and leave a message so we can estimate amount of food needed .
    • Participants are encouraged to invite other persons to the event.

  • Range Work Bee
    • Date: 29 September 2018, Saturday
    • Time: 9:00 AM - ??? PM
    • Location: PLSC Ranges and Clubhouse
    • Lunch (free to all club members) will begin at noon and we will finish up any projects still needing attention after lunch.
    • Please let us know if you plan to attend. Call Dallas at 482-4365 and leave a message. We need to estimate how much food we should purchase.
    • This is your last chance to earn work credit towards your 2019 membership dues.

  • Personal Protection in the Home - NRA Course

    • Times:  Friday, 6-9 pm
                  Saturday, 9 am - 5 pm
    • Location: PLSC Clubhouse and ranges. (Go to PLSC location web page .)
    • Description:
         Completion of this course will satisfy the training requirements for a Michigan Concealed Pistol License. This course is open to anyone.
          We have a team of instructors working together to help you develop your handgun skills, learn about self defense and the law, and teach you how to enhance your safety while in and around your home.
    • Registration: Persons taking the course must register through the the NRA Training web page for this course.

    • Information: The NRA web page provides specific and detailed information about fees, fee payment procedures, contact information, etc.
    • Fee: Fee: $125. (2018 PLSC members qualify for a $25 discount.)
    • Note: The course is being offered as a fund-raising activity to benefit the Portage Lake Sportsmen's Club.

  • Hunter Education Course
    • Dates: Saturday & Sunday, 8 & 9 Sept 2018
                (Students must attend both days)
    • Times: Saturday, 8:30 am - 4:30 pm
                Sunday, 9:00 am - 4:30 pm
    • Location: PLSC Clubhouse and ranges
    • Registration: All students must pre-register.

    • Fee: $10 which covers the cost of ammunition, eye & ear protection, range fees, and refreshments

  • Workshop for Hunter Education Instructors - A review and updating session for instructors of Michigan hunter education courses.
    • Date: 21 July 2018, Saturday

  • IDPA Classifier - A shooting event to classify individuals for IDPA events.
    • Date: 30 June 2018, Saturday
    • Time: 8:30 AM - Registration & Safety Review
               9:00 AM - Shooting begins

  • Members' Quarterly Meeting - Social Meeting with Cookout & Shooting Activities
    • Date: 21 June 2018, Thursday
    • Time: 5:30 PM until ?
    • Location: PLSC grounds
    • Burgers, Hot Dogs, and Chips will be served.
    • All PLSC members and their families are invited and encouraged to attend!
    • During or after eating, there will be a general meeting of members.
    • At around 7pm, we'll set up several fun, introductory shooting activities on the ranges. We'll have three, simultaneous, 20 minute sessions -- 5-Stand Shotgun; Action Pistol; and Shooting the AR-15. Each session will be repeated three times so everyone can rotate through all stations.
    • Due to time constraints, no personal firearms will be allowed during these brief sessions. However, if you want to stay longer and try one of the activities, bring your own firearms/ammo. (Shotgun ammo must be of shot size 7½ or smaller.)
    • Everyone should bring eye and ear protection, insect repellent, and dress for the weather.

  • Range Work Bee
    • Date: 12 May 2018, Saturday
    • Time: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM
    • Location: PLSC Ranges and Clubhouse
    • In event of rain, snow, etc.: Watch your email for announcements regarding rescheduling of the Work Bee. Any changes will be posted on the home page of the club's web site.
    • Please bring: Implements of construction and destruction.
    • Annual members who participate in this Work Bee may earn work credits toward costs of membership.
    • General clean up and fix up of club house and grounds. Ranges will be closed to shooting for at least part of the day. Contact club secretary for more details. (Club contact information)

  • Copper Country Friends of NRA Annual Fund-Raising Banquet
    In the recent past, Friends of NRA has given significant financial support to the PLSC for improvement of the club's local programs and facilities.

  • Annual Membership Meeting of the Portage Lake Sportsmen's Club
    • Date: Thursday, February 15, 2018
    • Location: Ramada Waterfront Inn, Hancock, MI
    • Time: 5:30 pm - Social/Cocktail Hour with cash bar
               6:30 pm - Dinner: Sit, Order off menu, Eat
               7:30 pm - Annual meeting called to order

  • 3-Gun-Shoot
    • Date: 13 August 2016, Saturday
    • Time: 8:00 am - Squads finalized
               8:15 am -Safety Review
               8:30 am - Shooting begins
    • Location: PLSC Range
    • Lunch: Free for all shooters; $5 for others
    • Shooters must pre-register for the shoot.
