Events of the Recent Past

The PLSC organizes and sponsors various events throughout the year. Announcements of some events in the recent past are listed below as information for members, prospective members, and other persons interested in activities of the PLSC.

These past events are listed with the most recent first.

  • Deer Rifle Sight-In Day
    • Date: Saturday, November 2, 2019
    • Time: Range opens at 10 am. Assistance and use of supplied sighting-in equipment furnished until 3 pm.
    • Location: PLSC Clubhouse and rifle range.
    • Public is welcome. Club grounds will be open to both members and non-members.
    • Lunch (free) will be available at the club at noon. If you plan to eat lunch, please call Dallas at 482-4365 and leave a message so we can estimate amount of food needed .
    • Participants are encouraged to invite other persons to the event.

  • Hunter Education Course
    • Dates: Saturday & Sunday, 7 & 8 Sept 2019
                (Students must attend both days)
    • Times: Saturday, 8:30 am - 4:30 pm
                Sunday, 9:00 am - 4:30 pm
    • Location: PLSC Clubhouse and ranges
    • Registration: All students must pre-register.
    • Fee: $10 which covers the cost of ammunition, eye & ear protection, range fees, and refreshments

  • Personal Protection in the Home - NRA Course

    • 2019 Dates:
       July 26, Friday
       July 27, Saturday
    • Times:  Friday, 6-9 pm
                  Saturday, 9 am - 5 pm
    • Location: PLSC Clubhouse and ranges. (Go to PLSC location web page .)
    • Description:
         Completion of this course will satisfy the training requirements for a Michigan Concealed Pistol License. This course is open to anyone.
          We have a team of instructors working together to help you develop your handgun skills, learn about self defense and the law, and teach you how to enhance your safety while in and around your home.
    • Registration: Persons taking the course must register through the NRA Training web page for this course.

    • Information: The NRA web page provides specific and detailed information about fees, fee payment procedures, contact information, etc.
    • Fee: $125. (2019 PLSC members qualify for a $25 discount.)
    • Deposit: After completing registration through the NRA website, the required $30 deposit should be sent to this address:

    • Note: The course is being offered as a fund-raising activity to benefit the Portage Lake Sportsmen's Club.

  • Members' Quarterly Meeting - Social Meeting with Cookout & Shooting
    • Date: 20 June 2019, Thursday
    • Time: 5:30 PM until ?
    • Location: PLSC grounds
    • Burgers, Hot Dogs, and Chips will be served.
    • All PLSC members and their families are invited and encouraged to attend!
    • During or after eating, there will be a general meeting of members.
    • The club ranges will be available for shooting by members at about 7 PM after the meeting. The 5-stand shotgun range will be in operation and supervised for informal clay target shooting. The rifle and pistol ranges will also be open and supervised.
    • Members planing to participate in target shooting should bring their own firearms and ammunition. (Shotgun ammo must be of shot size 7½ or smaller.)
    • Everyone should dress for the weather and bring eye and ear protection. Insect repellent may be useful.
    • If you have not renewed your membership for 2019-2020, we will have renewal forms available at the clubhouse.
    • If you plan to attend, please RSVP with an email to the PLSC Secretary. Please indicate the number of guests who will be attending so that we can estimate how much food is needed.

  • Action Pistol Training Class
    • Dates: June 1 & 2, Saturday & Sunday
    • Times: 9 AM to 5 PM both days
    • Location: PLSC Ranges and Clubhouse
    • Instructional Fee: $400 plus $15 range fee
    • Class Size: Limited to 10 persons
    • Description:The PLSC is having a 2-day shooting class with Elias Franguoulis, World and National Champion IPSC and USPSA.

    • Ammo: Attendees should bring 1500 rounds

  • Range Work Bee
    • Date: 11 May 2019, Saturday
    • Time: 9:30 AM - 4:00 PM
    • Location: PLSC Ranges and Clubhouse
    • In event of rain, snow, etc.: Watch your email for announcements regarding rescheduling of the Work Bee. Any changes will be posted on the home page of the club's web site.
    • Please bring: Implements of construction and destruction
    • The goal of the work bee will be to get the club property "de- winterized" and ready for the summer shooting season. Here's what we plan to accomplish:
      1. Clean up branches and trash around the clubhouse and range areas. Bring rakes, shovels, wheel barrows, etc.
      2. Construct panels for controlling rifle range access. Bring hammers, power saws, speed squares, drill/drivers, etc.
      3. Muck out spillway on south pond. Bring shovels, grub hoes, rubber boots, etc.
      4. Install range boundary signs. Bring engineer's hammer, compass, computer tablet with Google Maps or mapping GPS, a 4-wheeler, etc.
      5. Finish organizing storage building on east end of the covered firing line.
      6. Turn on water, sweep the clubhouse floor, clean windows, wipe down tables, replace burned out light bulbs, open up bathrooms and kitchen sink, etc.
    • We need as many volunteers as we can get. There is plenty of work to be done.
    • The water well was shut down for the winter and the plumbing was drained, so bring your own food and drinks for this event.
    • Ranges will be closed to shooting for at least part of the day. Contact club secretary for more details.

  • Copper Country Friends of NRA Annual Fund-Raising Banquet
    In the recent past, Friends of NRA has given significant financial support to the PLSC for improvement of the club's local programs and facilities.

  • Annual Membership Meeting of the Portage Lake Sportsmen's Club
    • Date: Thursday, February 20, 2019
    • Location: Ramada Waterfront Inn, Hancock, MI
    • Time: 5:30 pm - Social/Cocktail Hour with cash bar
               6:30 pm - Dinner: Sit, Order off menu, Eat
               7:30 pm - Annual meeting called to order
    • Agenda: Election of officers; other items of business and discussion

  • Range Work Bee
    • Date: 29 September 2018, Saturday
    • Time: 9:00 AM - ??? PM
    • Location: PLSC Ranges and Clubhouse
    • Lunch (free to all club members) will begin at noon and we will finish up any projects still needing attention after lunch.
    • Please let us know if you plan to attend. Call Dallas at 482-4365 and leave a message. We need to estimate how much food we should purchase.
    • This is your last chance to earn work credit towards your 2019 membership dues.

    • Your help at the work bee would be greatly appreciated and we hope to have a large turnout. (Kids and spouses are welcome as well). Hope to see you there.

  • IDPA Classifier - A shooting event to classify individuals for IDPA events.

  • 3-Gun-Shoot
    • Date: 13 August 2016, Saturday
    • Time: 8:00 am - Squads finalized
               8:15 am -Safety Review
               8:30 am - Shooting begins
    • Location: PLSC Range
    • Lunch: Free for all shooters; $5 for others
    • Shooters must pre-register for the shoot.
    • Late Registrations may be accepted. Contact Scott Gruenberg (below).
    • Spectators are welcome. Bring eye & ear protection.
